In a society now run by prodigies, divided between Renegades and Anarchists, the lines between good and evil become blurred.

My take away from this story was: you can't judge a book by its cover. The "bad" guys are fighting for some "good" reasons. And the "good" guys aren't "good" all the time either. This novel explores how and why we come to believe the things we believe - ... Read More »

There is no need for this book to be this long. This story could have been told in 250, 300 pages, easily. There is so much fluff, you could stuff several Captain Chromium dolls with it, and still have enough left over to make a pillow that Nova won't use. Seriously, she might not sleep, but this... Nova and Adrian were fun to get to know. The challenges they faced: to be seen as valued members of their teams and to make a bigger difference in the world were encouraging. Their immediate connection made perfect sense. I can't wait to see how/if they will come to understand each other in the ... Read More »

Best book of all time!!

LoganLib_Sheridan Jan 11, 2021

I think this is a very tropey superhero book. There is a lot of discussion about wrong and right, ethics and morals. This book delivers exactly what you would expect. I like this book but I'm not sure it delivers that extra ooomph. Maybe it is a bit because a genre book.

There was also the fact that one of the main characters shares the same name as my father which is distracting.

I liked the inclusivity but I felt there could've been more, especially when it comes to superpowers. There are just so many ways to be inclusive. I think the book does an excellent job with Oscar in that his power isn't connected to his disability and his disability doesn't hold him back from being a hero. It's just how he is.

There are some interesting subtler powers in the book as well as the usual showy ones like flying, invisibility and invincibility. I would personally love the Librarians ability to remember everything he's read. It's a book-dragons wet dream! I also do not have enough artistic talent for Adrian's ability and would like to sleep more not less so no thanks to Nova's ability.

There is a lot of moral and ethical debate in this book about what is right and wrong but the book manages to display the many grey areas and how the wrong thing can be done for the right reasons and vice versa. The book starts out slow on this but build on it throughout the series. Despite the excellent debate throughout the book it still feels at a younger level though I'm not quite sure what would make this 'adult'.

This is a fun book with some food for thought if you're feeling hungry!

Love the idea and storyline for this series. the first book is definitely five starts, however in the second book I felt the Romance became a little too intrusive upon the story. still an inspiring series!

Marissa Meyer has delivered another novel to the shelves, and I loved it! Renegades is a superhero thriller that will keep you reading. Nova Artino witnessed her family gunned down in cold blood. No one came to save them. Her uncle takes her into the Anarchists and trained her to take down the heroes that failed her family. Several years later, these prodigy heroes, the Renegades have defeated the Anarchists and established world order. But Nova hasn’t forgotten about their failure, and she wants revenge. As she infiltrates and gets closer to tearing them down, she meets Adrian, a Renegade. Righteous and heroic, he believes in her. Which side will she choose? Renegades is an amazing book with great character development and exploration of the gray area.

When I tell you I loved this... I LOVED THIS. It's sooo good. One reason is that its kinda like a first person, third person mix perspective which makes it super interesting. Marissa Meyer does a great job of showing you that there is no villain and hero, only two opposing sides with different opinions. Anybody with the interest in YA sci-fi should read this.

If the Red Queen and Gallagher Books series had a baby, the Renegades series would be it. Renegades by Marissa Meyer is the first book in a three-book series. The book follows the story of Adrian Everhart and Nova Artino in a world where some humans are born with extraordinary powers. The Renegades are a group of these humans which police and protect the city. The Anarchists, another much smaller group of humans with these abilities, are hell-bent on destroying the Renegades. Nova is an Anarchist known as “Nightmare" becomes an undercover agent and joins the Renegades. She despises the Renegades because of what they have done to her in the past and is invested in taking them down from the inside. Adrian is a Renegade known as “Sketch”, but also operates under an alias known as “The Sentinel”. Adrian strives to uncover the truth about his mother, while also learning about other unexpected things about his peers on the way. Adrian and Nova work together to fight crime, while also uncovering feelings and secrets which were kept hidden deep.

Once I started this book, I could not put it down. I especially enjoyed the suspense and the constant question of whether Nova’s or Adrian’s cover would be blown. The imagination and creativity of the wide range of prodigy names/abilities blew me away and instantly created a more vivid picture of the world. The plot twists and curveballs thrown at the characters are very unique and come out of nowhere, leaving you wanting for more.

In general, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys books with a lot of adventure and espionage, with a touch of romance. I would also recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the Gallagher Girl or the Red Queen series. - Aditi, Grade 10

The Renegades by Marissa Meyer is that cute, slightly cliché heroes vs. villains story that is perfect to read over a long weekend. I really enjoyed Meyer's Lunar Chronicles Series, and this start to the Renegades trilogy did not leave me disappointed. The story follows Nova Artino, who's spent her whole life hating the Renegades-an organization of self proclaimed heroes who intend to rid the world from evil. The renegades are the reason Nova has lost everything but for the organization to fall? Nova must find herself disguised as one of their own. The overall storyline of this book really intrigued me. I loved the world building, and the characters being diverse but not in the sense that it feels forced or unwarranted. Nova was a character I grew to root for and I loved the chemistry between her and Adrien. I can't help but recommend this as your newest young adult read and look forward to reading the sequel. 4.5 Stars-@Ruby_Tuesday of the Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review Board
Is the concept of ‘good and evil’ really as black and white as it seems? Or, is there a grey area in between that can’t quite be classified as either? This concept and more are delved into on such a deep level in this masterpiece by well known author Marissa Meyer.
We’re presented with two equally loveable protagonists on opposite sides of the spectrum, who fight against prejudice and the things they were brought up to believe. The plot is lush and full of action, and the characters are diverse, relevant and relatable. And, the majority of them have superpowers, so that just takes everything to a whole other level.
Highly recommended to all the science-fiction, fantasy and action lovers out there, this first instalment of a new, fast-paced trilogy is guaranteed to keep your mind occupied long after the last page is turned.
It is an instant favorite of mine, and undoubtedly many other readers’ as well.

I just loved this book, especially Oscar and Ruby. But, I think the story could've been a little bit more fast-paced. Overall, this is a really good book to read.

I enjoyed reading Renegades because of the characters, the plot, and the amazing writing! In this world, people who have amazing powers are called prodigies and the Renegades are the superheroes everyone looks up to. I loved the variety of abilities the prodigies had and all of the characters' personalities. Renegades is one of my favorite books of all time and the entire journey was awesome! I loved this book so much!

The interesting thing about this book, and series, is that the reader doesn't know who is good and who is evil. Meyer delves into the personalities, wants, and backgrounds of many characters, and just when you think someone is good or bad, she makes you question your answer. It's a very unique twist on the good versus evil trope that keeps the reader on their toes.

One can not be brave if one has no fear

"To be weak," Phobia rasped. "To be helpless."
Ingrid cast him a sideways look. "Excuse me?"
"That is his deepest fear," said Phobia, idly twirling the scythe blade overhead. "To be, in essence without power."
Honey huffed. "How fitting for a self-righteous Renegade"
"Perhaps," said Phobia, the hood of his cloak swaying with a slow nod. "And yet, a difficult fear to exploit against one who has been given so very much of it."
