This crime drama shows that you don't need fanciful visual effects or a who's who cast to be gripping. Olsen's rookie FBI agent is unable to call in a crime squad since the deceased victim technically died as a result from the extreme weather she was forced to run in after escaping from her assai... Very good movie. Fantastic wilderness scenes. Good acting, very fast snowmobile riding. There was some mumbling (were they supposed to be 'thoughts"?) which was not understandable but overall it was worth watching.

Beautiful film that takes place on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming. The body of an eighteen year old Native American girl is found three miles from the nearest town frozen in the snow. She'd been raped by multiple assailants, beaten, and left to run for her life barefoot in the snow. She made it six miles before her lung froze and she choked on her own blood (pulmonary edema). Three years previously a fifteen year old Native American girl was found in a similar situation except her body was eaten by wolves so they couldn't tell if she was raped or murdered. They find a second body, that of a 40s male, and then the pieces start to fit together. It takes an FBI agent, a hunter, the tribal police, and a very cool snow suit to catch the killers. One of the best films of 2017.

Excellent depiction of both Native American culture and a crisp, rather violent plotline, with one of the best uses of a flashback scene I've seen. Pleasantly surprised by Elizabeth Olsen's role as the outsider on the rez: an unwelcome federal FBI agent who proves tough beyond blonde stereotype and slowly earns the grudging respect of the clannish community. Renner plays the laconic hunter whose own relationships/respect for women in his life means he proves an invaluable ally to Olsen, a sense of justice that won't rest, and gentle support to a devastated fellow father. The impact of children's deaths on parents is tenderly and sadly done. The snowy scenery of Utah stands in for Wyoming.

A bit of a slow burn at first, but that's forgiven with quality acting and pretty scenery. The final third of the film rewards you for your patience. Three Marvel vets are included in the cast. Jon Bernthal reprises his role as The Punisher who somehow has found his way into rural Wyoming. Jeremy Renner, Hawkeye, has given up his bow and arrow in favor of a rifle. Elizabeth Olsen, the Scarlet Witch, seems to have lost her power entirely.

A well-acted and tragic story that is all too true (it's based on true events). Good photography and direction but the sound quality is all over the place. Too low. Too high. I was changing the volume frequently. I found a middle level and put on the subtitles to cover the mumbling. The plot was generally coherent but a few points were unclear or abandoned and unresolved. Overall, a fairly-good movie starring two Avengers and quite a few Canadian actors (despite it not being shot in Canada), namely Graham Greene, Tantoo Cardinal, and Hugh Dillon.

The end asserts that justice and revenge are best served cold, if not in and by the cold :)- Not a fast paced film, but worth the hr and 40 min....

Set in rural Wyoming, a Fish and Wildlife Officer and local hunter Cory Lambert (played by Jeremy Renner) discovers the body of an aboriginal woman. Cory Lambert’s marriage fell apart after the unsolved murder of his daughter and perhaps this is the reason he was so eager to help the fish out of water FBI Agent (played by Elizabeth Olsen) and tribal police chief (played by Graham Greene) solve this crime. Was it a family member, her boyfriend or just a random act of violence? Watch to find out.
In recent years, awareness surrounding the plight of missing and murdered aboriginal women has been brought into the mainstream consciousness and the federal government of Canada has launched a National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. http://www.mmiwg-ffada.ca/
Even with this increased attention, it is still not known how many aboriginal women go missing in Canada each year. While this movie takes place in the United States, the answer still remains the same.

Then the phone rang which is never good. But today it was.

You're daughter's gone. Now the good news, as soon as you accept that, as soon as you let yourself suffer, allow yourself to grieve, You'll be able to visit her in your mind, and remember all the joy she gave you. All the love she knew.

The point is, Martin, you can't steer from the pain. If you do, you'll rob yourself. You'll rob yourself of every memory of her. Every last one. From the first step... to her last smile. You kill 'em all. Just take the pain, Martin. Do you hear me? You take it. It's the only way to keep her with you.
-I'm just tired, Cory. I'm just.. so tired of fighting this life.

The Gannet Peak. Highest mountain in Wyoming. On the hottest day in August, still there's a feet of snow. Today, too cold to snow.
===
You know what it's like out here in this frozen hell? Ain't there nothing to do. No nothing. Aint no women, no fun. This is fxcking snow and the fxcking silence, that's all!
-My family's people were forced here. Stuck here for a century. That's snow and silence is the only thing that hasn't been taken from them. So what did you take?
===
I got lucky.
-Ah. well, luck don't live out here. Luck lives in the city. Don't live out here. It lives where you get hit by a bus or not. Where your bank is robbed or not. At someone's damn cell phone when he come up to a crosswalk. That's luck, that's winning or losing. Out here you survive or you surrender. That's determined by your strength and bare spirit. Wolves don't kill the unlucky deer. They kill the weak ones. You fought for your life Jane. And now you get to walk away with it. You'll get to go home.

(12-7-2017: Ojai officials said it was a “miracle” that fierce Santa Ana winds had subsided on Thursday ...)
I got my truck and a high out of there and I wound up in a little mountain town called Ojai. I get there and it's like fruit farms. Vineyards. And there is this mountain surrounding it you know like protecting the town. And the people there like everybody smiles at each other. They say hello. it's like I remember thinking they were all like. I don't know. They had these looks in their eyes. Like they ran on some sort of secret like they had all figured it out. There is this mission, the Spanish mission right there in the middle of the town. They are having Christmas mass. They're celebrating Christmas. 70 degrees where you know. I just land there. pick me an orange of the tree and sat down on a bench, to listen that choir singing, eating my orange. You know that was the best Christmas I've ever had.

A Meadow in My perfect world:
Here is a meadow
in my perfect world.
Where wind dances
the branches of the tree
casting leopards spots of light
across the face of pond.
The tree stands tall
and grand and alone,
shading the world beneath it.
There will come a day
when I rest against its spine
and look out over a valley
where the sun warms,
but never burns.
I will watch leaves turn
Green, then amber, then crimson.
Then no leaves at all.
But the tree will not die.
For in this place,
winter never comes.
It is here,
in the cradle of all I hold dear,
I guard every memory of you.
And when I find myself frozen
in the mud of the real
far from your loving eyes.
I will return to this place,
close mine, and take solace in the simple
perfection of knowing you.
