What an Emotional Roller coaster ride! A great look at how people deal with anger, wanting revenge and seeking vengeance. This is what happens when people try to right a wrong with another wrong. Well deserved oscars to Sam and Frances! Really makes you think. Also, loved Woody's character and ... Read More »

A story about loss, remorse and revenge - an excellent film with a strong cast. Has a Coen Brothers feel - edgy, dark comedy, violent and makes you think. Well deserved Oscar for Frances McDormand.

I haven't seen a movie like this in years - beautiful shots of lives that are undone and an uncertainty that choices the characters make will only lead to a faster descent downward. Some scenes are unexpected in their ruthlessness and one scene in particular made me think that sooner or later someone was going to craft a character crass enough to painfully debilitate those who arguably 'had it coming.' Is it a happy film? Nope. Is it a realistic film? In some ways no and in other ways - the ways that will make us sad the most - unfortunately, yes.

Usually when the descriptions says 'dark comedy', I don't watch it, but I thought maybe this once for Woody and McDormand. There is a scene that was darker than I like, but it wasn't the whole movie, and I came out thinking this was an excellent movie. Every time I thought I had it figured out, there came another unexpected twist in the plot. Excellent acting, witty dialogue, compelling story.

I was expecting this to be a full-on drama, but there's lots of dark humour in it, as well. Frances McDormand is fabulous, and I understand why she won the Oscar. All of the other actors did a wonderful job and the movie was well worth the watch. I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys movies about small towns and the prejudices and kindness that can sometimes be prevalent within them.

If you like your comedy dark and your drama incredibly well acted, here you go. I was cracking up one minute, ugly crying the next, then sitting slackjawed in wonder at the depth and pathos of the characters the next. Wash, rinse, repeat. It well deserves the awards it's received, but be ready for a lot of mood whiplash and unresolved questions when you watch it.

Great acting, good direction, interesting evolvement of characters.

This chilling movie proves to be a strong mix of comedy and drama, centered on a mother wanting justice for her daughter's rape and murder. The mother (played by Oscar Winner Frances McDormand) takes drastic action by putting up billboards in her small town of Ebbing, Missouri, attempting to hold the police accountable for not taking action regarding her daughter's case. The billboards have a strong effect on the town and challenge several inhabitants to consider their actions and way of thinking.

A superb, excellent, smart and funny movie. Me and many of my friends loved it. Acting was excellent, especially Frances McDormand was perfect, natural, well deserved Oscar.
I am strongly against profanity, but I got over it in this movie. Wish the ending was slightly different, but found the plot to be clever. Enjoyed all the characters and their growth. A well done movie! (def superior to the Shape of Water).

Frances McDormand deserved the OSCAR. Too many "F" bombs. Lots of surprises,

Too much swearing and many crude words were used in this film. The excessive use of the "f" word does absolutely nothing to tell a story.

This movie is based on a true story, the acting was well done and it received numerous Oscar nominations. I could only give it 2 1/2 stars because of the language.

I don't get it. I don't get why such a fuss was made over this movie. I actually found it kind of offensive and not because of the portrayals of racists in the south, but maybe because that stereotype is overdone and how the biggest racist among them could just turn on a dime and become a hero in the end - kind of unlikely. And is Missouri really the south anyway? The overplayed accents would make you think so. Sam Rockwell plays Dixon, the about-faced racist, and he won Best Supporting Actor Oscar for it. I'm not saying he is a bad actor, but that character was bordering on ridiculous. And the subject here is serious. Mildred's (Frances McDormand) daughter was raped and murdered and, according to her, the police have done little to solve the crime. Mildred is hard-boiled. It's a one-note character. It is not a character worthy of the Oscar she won for it. She is a brilliant actress. Her 1997 Oscar for Fargo was well-deserved for that off-beat character. I suppose with the "Me Too" movement happening in Tinseltown, Hollywood felt compelled to honor a strong woman who stands up to male authority figures and I'm all for that too, but this film really falls flat and has nothing to say. The only saving grace was Woody Harrelson as Police Chief Willoughby. Not only is his southern accent real, but his character is the only one that seems genuine and his is the only story-line that offers an authentic dramatic element. His screen time is minimal though and he did not win his Best Supporting Actor nomination.

Many many quotes including racial slurs in IMDb already. Thanks to the posters who shared them:

Lyrics to the "Last Rose Of Summer":
'Tis the last rose of summer left blooming alone
All her lovely companions are faded and gone
No flower of her kindred, no rosebud is nigh
To reflect back her blushes and give sigh for sigh

I'll not leave thee, thou lone one, to pine on the stem
Since the lovely are sleeping, go sleep thou with them
Thus kindly I scatter thy leaves o'er the bed
Where thy mates of the garden lie scentless and dead

So soon may I follow when friendships decay
And from love's shining circle the gems drop away
When true hearts lie withered and fond ones are flown
Oh who would inhabit this bleak world alone?
This bleak world alone
