Matt Damon is shrunk to 5 inches tall to escape his life in the real world. The movie starts out interesting, but then it seems to have too many plots, and unlikable characters. I was disappointed in this film.

An unexpectedly enjoyable film with an entertaining cast. I took away the underlying moral that you can't always run away from your problems.

Horrible. Just don't.

Poor Hong Chau, she shines when allowed outside of the stereotypical "rude Viet girl" scenes.

Not a comedy but I enjoyed this strange movie anyhow.

Not a comedy as advertised on cover. Nor did the plot make any sense. A waste of time to watch.

This movie bills itself as a comedy, and is anything but. It is someone’s take on the world and the state of our times.

Ugh had high hopes for Downsizing but it was a waste of time. Hong Chau was irritating. Damon's character was irritating. Last half was like sitting through the most boring college lecture ever. Maybe if they threw in the world ending with lots of natural disasters destroying everything and stupid Dumpf going oh what do I dooooo??????

The first half is slow.
The second half is very good.
Hong Chau is a very good actress
and adds some real life to her role.
Who doesn't love Matt Damon?

Unfortunately the public and it seems the studio distributing this film thought this was a comedy and certainly this is what theatrical trailers tried to spin. In actuality as the title suggests this movie is a sustained metaphor for the shrinking dreams of the middle class. Matt Damon's character is in full midlife crises and pegs all of his hopes first in shrinking himself and then to a new age cult in the hope to (ironically) find a bigger place for himself in the world. In the end he discovers doing the little things for people can add up to larger things for himself and those around him.

A thinking film with some funny moments. I would not call this a comedy. Science fiction with social questions. Recommended.

Interesting movie. Off kilter a bit but made you think. Glad I saw it via library copy than paid at theatre. Overall enjoyable 😊

And then of course, when we get to politics, Israelis shrinking Palestinians,
-Ron...
African dictators shrinking rival ethnic groups.
-Ron. Look, Ron. In any major transformation of society, are there serious growing pains?

In the 1950s, the institute identified over-population as mankind's single greatest long-term threat, the cause of all the catastrophes we are seeing today-- extreme climate and weather events, and the devastating impact on food and water security.

No offense, but um... do you think if you're that small you should still have all the same rights as the rest of us normal-sized people? I mean, like the right to vote?
-Why wouldn't we?
Oh, well, jeez, let's see, um... You don't buy as many products, you're not paying as much sales tax, and some of you aren't even paying any income tax. I mean, you're not really participating in our economy, are you?

The world has already seen five major extinctions, and now there will be another. I...I didn't want to believe it. None of us did, but there we were in Helsinki, big and small. Climatologists, bacteriologists, demographers, physicists, immunologists, 26 Nobel Prize winners among us. We built all the models, did all the math, and all conclusion was consistent. Homo Sapiens will soon vanish from the Earth. It is now an actuarial certainty. No matter how the end will come-- environmental disaster, pandemic disease, unbreathable air, impotable water, not enough food, nuclear winter, some combination of them all. Relatively soon the Earth will indeed purge itself of human life, and God knows how many other species.

Friends tell friends the truth. Okay, maybe sometimes I'm a little bit asshole, but the world needs assholes. Otherwise where would shit go out?

Equivalent value. You're solidly inside the Blue Chip zone. In Leisureland your $152,000 translates to $12.5 million-- to live on, for life.

When you know death comes soon, you look around things more close.

Oh, did you hear about all that gas being released in Antarctica? From the ice? The methane?
-Oh, I haven't really been following the news that much lately.
Apparently it's a big deal. Scientists are saying the more the ice melts, the more methane comes out making more ice melt.

I ask myself, Dusan, why the people they want to become small? To help the environment? Please. They become small to have the things which until now were only for the rich, which, by the way, is the genius of the concept.
