Held captive by the brutal Kaiser since age six when she witnessed her mother's murder, Theodosia, called Ash Princess, is now sixteen and prepared to reclaim the throne by any means necessary.
When her country was invaded, Theodosia's mother, the Fire Queen, was murdered before her eyes. The Kaiser had Theo crowned Ash Princess-- a title of shame to bear in her new life as a prisoner. For ten years a captive in her own palace, Theo has endured the relentless abuse and ridicule of the Kaiser and his court. One night the Kaiser forces her to do the unthinkable. With blood on her hands and all hope of reclaiming her throne lost, surviving is no longer enough. But she does have a weapon: her mind is sharper than any sword. And power isn't always won on the battlefield.

I have taken a long hiatus from fantasy novels, because they start to read the exact same, but I was intrigued enough by the summary of this title that I decided to give it a chance, and I was pleasantly surprised. A teen girl that has been removed from her position of power by the Kaiser and kept as a hostage--beaten and tortured every time her people try to revolt. The Ash Princess definitely has a few things to learn about politics and men, but I think that was the point of this story--by the end of the book, she learns what is the most important to her, and she is ready to stand up and fight for it! Bad news...we have to wait for the sequel.

This cover is absolutely gorgeous and is what initially drew me in. I found this book to be an engaging fantasy with a dark side. There's a love triangle, magic and even some betrayal. I think fans of Sarah J. Maas and Leigh Bardugo would enjoy reading Ash Princess.

Theo begins her transformation from a girl leftover from the past regime to the Queen of her people in this book of court intrigue. As she pulls away from her childhood persona as "Lady Thora", I felt her struggle with all of the manipulation and lying as well as fight her feelings between old friendships and what is best for her people. It didn't move quickly, but was a story I look forward to reading more about.
