A bit light on substance, high on color and spectacle (and sometimes melodrama but, hey, that's fine). Shame about the CGI already looking a tad dated, and some of the actors, um, don't sing all that well, but (if you go in expecting a musical, anyway--if you're not, you won't like it at all, I s... Lots of singing, lots of dancing & great costumes! Interesting to learn how/why PT Barnum started his circus. Entertaining, especially if you are a fan of musicals.

The dance numbers and the choreography were top notch, however the story was so cliched, flat, and outdated, it is mind numbing. The characters: forgettable. Story: generic. Lesson: what lesson? The bar scenes, especially the first, have some of the best choreography i have ever seen. But, I like Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, and Rebecca Ferguson, plus they can all sing. The fact they can sing makes all the difference in the world. I would rather pay to watch unknown actors who can sing, rather than big name actors who can't; or just dub them. Bottom line, if you're looking for a descent movie that doesn't require much thought or isn't very historically accurate, this will serve; but if you're looking for a good story, keep on moving.

Very good movie with great music, choreography, cinematography, acting, and positive messages. Some people seem to be hung up with how the movie not 100% aligned with the real P.T. Barnum story. It does not bother me a bit as this is not supposed to be a documentary. Just enjoy it as a movie, not a history lesson.
I highly recommend the Special Features, especially about "The Songs": the two talented song writers, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, revealed their stories of how each amazing song in the film was developed -- very entertaining and worth watching.

Sometimes you come across a film that makes you wonder "did I see the same thing as everyone else?" and The Greatest Showman is that for for me. Here's a challenge: first, forget it has anything to do with the real P.T. Barnum, Jenny Lind, etc., except for names. Then write, or get your child to write, a story about how a scrappy circus owner and his freaks (that's what they were called in Barnum's time, and that's what the movie calls them) learn to believe in themselves. Don't be afraid to make the characters two- or even one dimensional, or to lay the corny lessons on thick. And there you go; that's The Greatest Showman. The score has one memorable song, which is played several times. Difficult dance moves are not performed by the main actors, but by obvious body doubles. The sets and costumes are gorgeous, but I guess they couldn't find trained horses for this circus -- so some CGI ones are plopped in. You may like it if you're looking for an up with people message. But I wouldn't use it to introduce children to movie musicals. Don't they deserve better?

I have looked up some information on P.T. Barnum and see that there is some truth portrayed into this film like being a poor boy and a man that had vision and determination. As a musical, it is well done and richly layered with original music, choreographed segments, good acting along with an attempt as a biographical movie that does not bore.
My partner and I watched this film after recently seeing a CBC review of this film that had created some staying power and great reviews and repeated video adaptions of the songs in the film.
P.T. Barnum played by versatile actor, Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables: 2012; Prisoners: 2013; Chappie: 2015; Logan: 2017), with other good performances by Michelle Williams(Manchester by the Sea: 2016; All the Money in the World:2017; Venom: 2018), Zac Efron (The Paperboy: 2012; Neighbours: 2014; Baywath: 2017), Rebecca Ferguson (Forence Foster Jenkins: 2016; Life: 2017; Mission Impossible: 2018), Keala Settle (Ricki and the Flash: 2015; Hall American: Forbidden: 2018) and Zendaya (Spider-man: Homecoming: 2017; Smallfoot: 2018).
Extras on this DVD is worth watching as they spend time looking at the cast, director and writing team enjoying this musical wonder!

Directed by Michael Gracey in 2017 inspired by the story of P. T. Barnum's creation of the Barnum & Bailey Circus and the lives of its star attractions, this American musical depicts the birth of show business.
Although I admire well-choreographed performsnces, the epic drama appears shallow at the expense of its complex subject's far more intriguing real-life story.

Enjoyed the heck out of this. Most modern musicals I've seen are more light-heartedly tongue-in-cheek than not, and usually they need the audience to accept their soft bent on life to be able to deliver what's being presented. Greatest Showman is no different but it does have a ton of great well-written songs, performed superbly, and the dancing is so clever and enjoyable. Its social themes are spot on and meaningful, such as the incredible Les Mis is, though a bit less so.

I really felt for the families, Barnum's home family as well as his circus family, the portrayal felt honest and well played. The pace and editing felt right and the songs, again, are so well done. I even bought the soundtrack, which I rarely do. A really great movie.
