Wowza, that was one gripping, gruesome, gory thrill ride. So much fun! And in the middle of it all, some moments of pathos/tenderness -- just enough to make me feel a little guilty and twisted for enjoying the mayhem so much. Here's the word of warning to you normal, tender-hearted people to stay away.
Nick Cutter certainly has some balls-to-the-wall chops.

This novel was creepy and gruesome, and had some parts that were downright sad. As the story escalates you really get to know the characters and see how trauma can either bring them together, or break them.

Great horror book for spooky season! It's about nasty parasitic worms, so if you don't want a little gross with your horror, steer clear. Otherwise, it's a very compelling read. Some of the characters are quite sympathetic, while others make you root for their deaths. Yes, it's teenage boys trapped on a deserted island, so Lord of the Flies comparisons are inevitable, but so what? Nick Cutter may be dipping into a familiar well, but he does so with skill.

I can sum up this book in four words that is the stuff of nightmares: genetically modified parasitic worms. Still creeped out.

Good page turner of a horror book. Really enjoyed the premise and characters.

This book was touted as an excellent old-fashion horror story. I couldn't wait to read it. However, I found it rather boring. It also appeared to borrow the Lord of the Flies theme.

This seemed like some kind of Lord of the Flies imitation. But with the addition of very unpleasant lethal internal worms. I like the works of Stephen King and others, but I didn't bother to finish this book because it just seemed intent on being disgusting without being a very good mystery/thriller.

Nick Cutter is a talented writer and this was a great read- slower parts in some areas but overall really intense. I’ve never felt such a visceral feeling of dread while reading a book. This really hit the home run- I can typically be affected by horror novels for the general emotions like fear but this one hit the gambit with fear, nausea, and utter devastation. --Taylor (see more of my picks by following WoodneathTaylor)
