Vaka sits, regretting her choice of coat, on the cold steps of her new school. Her father appears to have forgotten to pick her up, her mother has forgotten to give her this week's pocket money, and the school is already locked for the day. Grownups, she decides, are useless. With no way to call home, she resigns herself to waiting on the steps until her father remembers her. When a girl approaches, Vaka recognizes her immediately from class, and from her unusual appearance: two of her fingers are missing. The girl lives at the back of the school, on the other side of a high fence, and Vaka asks to call her father from the girl's house. That afternoon is the last time anyone sees Vaka. Detective Huldar and child psychologist Freyja are called in. Soon, they find themselves at the heart of another shocking case.

Heart wrenching child abuse and pedophilia incredibly dysfunctional authorities allowing the abuse to be covered up for years because of the interference of a powerful public figure. Finally the combination of a persistent detective and the recovery of a time capsule shed new facts and for once most of the bad guys get a taste of their own cruelty and negligence !!

I've read all her available books. This by far my favourite and the 2nd in the series. Huldar and Freya are interesting characters who work well together. Many twists and turns in this sad story. The ending is unexpected! Looking forward to the next in this particular series.

Yrsa Sigurdardottir is one of my favorite authors and she met my expectations in this latest Icelandic thriller. The subject is disturbing (child sexual abuse) but the "reckoning" makes the story bearable. Detective Huldar and child psychologist, Freyja, continue their interesting relationship and Freya's jailbird brother discovers he has a 10-month-old little girl, Saga, from an earlier casual relationship. This little girl is supposedly "the spitting image of the internet sensation, Angry Cat."
Yrsa includes these little bits of humor in the story which prevents it from becoming too depressing. The last two pages were absolutely great!
