Manchester 1976: Cambridge educated Tony Wilson (Steve Coogan) is at a Sex Pistols gig. Totally inspired by this pivotal moment in music history, he and his friends set up a record label, Factory Records, signing first Joy Division then the Happy Mondays, who become seminal artists of their time. What ensues is a tale of music, sex, drugs and the birth of one of the most famous dance clubs in the world, The Hai̇enda - a mecca for clubbers as famous as the likes of Studio 54.

Its wit and sense of fun open it up to people with only a passing interest in the music and the era.

Very dull which is too bad since Manchester spawned great bands like Joy Division, New Order, Blue Mondays during the late 1970s. Unfortunately, the DVD focuses on Tony Wilson (played by Steve Coogan) who was a journalist that discovered bands, opened a club, created a record label, but he himself was not in anyway interesting and Coogan's portrayal didn't help (not funny, makes the main character quite a jerk.) Listen to some of the music instead.

As a chronicle of a music scene I don’t know much about (except that Joy Division is awesome) a lot of the details from this one are lost on me. Still, this is a fresh take on the biopic/”rise and fall of a scene” type of movie that is pretty enjoyable despite also being a bit of a mess in parts.

Music clips + mockumentary + docudrama, with random appearances of real-life scenesters. Starring Shirley Henderson, Paddy Considine, Andy Serkis, John Simm, and the epically unpleasant Steve Coogan.

If you are interested in the history of punk music and how it became rave music all based on Tony Wilson you may like this movie. If you are expecting a fun, exciting, and entertaining movie on the other hand this one is long winded and never ending. I don't recommend it in the slightest.
