I won't be kneeling before Zod, because that often-quoted line is almost the only decent thing this horrible 70s film has going for it. My recollection of the first Superman film is that it was at least reasonably well-made for its time, and was somewhat entertaining in a popcorny way, but this one is just absolute cheeseball garbage, more likely to bore the viewer than amuse them. Alternating between stiflingly tedious material and hilariously awful writing, and ending with a very pointless soap-opera twist which is *immediately* reversed and could have simply been left off, this was a gigantic waste of my time which is barely worth the effort of finding a few halfway-satisfactory scenes amidst the dreck.

Digitized 1980 sequel to "Superman the movie." While it seamlessly follows the story but no new grounds on set design and special effects. Nonetheless, enjoy the film's elements: Will Kent and Lois do it already; Alien attack; Rare Eiffel Tower tour; a young Terence Stamp; more Lex Luthor etc.

If you like the series, suggest The 4 films with Christopher Reeve as Kal-El/Superman/Clark Kent, suitable for binge watching, about 8 hours in total:

Superman, the movie 1978** (143 min.) - origin, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Earthquake disaster...
Superman II 1980 (127 min.)
Superman III 1983 (125 min.)
Superman IV, the quest for peace 1987 (90min.)
Includes theatrical trailers, deleted scenes, commentary, and additional scenes

** Original 1978 theatrical version

Two directors make this a bit of a mess. It has its moments but ultimately does not fulfill. RIP.

I would recommend that anyone interested in this film see The Donner Cut version, if you can. The library has it on Bku-ray,
Richard Donner was replaced as director during the filming of Superman II. His vision followed the same plot, but includes scenes with Marlon Brando, includes humour without being quite as campy. Just a notch better, imo.

How is this thing included among the good superhero films?

Where the original is mythic, this one is camp (and not in the fun way). Where the original is earnest, this one is ironic. Where the original is hopeful, this one is jaded. Where the original is about making choices with consequences, this one is about avoiding consequences.

Picks up where the first film left off, with the arrival of three villains from Superman's home planet. General Zod, Nom and Ursa were exiled to the Phantom Zone, by Jor-el and thus are looking for revenge against his son who is Earth's hero Superman. However, the Man of Steel after proclaiming his love for fellow reporter Lois Lane has given up his powers to be with her. He gets into a fight at a truck stop where he is beaten to a pulp. Realizing that the only way to save Earth, is to regain his powers, Clark returns to the Fortress, and in fact becomes Super once again. The movie's third act is a duel to the death in the city of Metropolis. The villains accompanied by the ever diabolical Lex Luthor take Lois and lead Superman to the Fortress, where he ultimately defeats the three villians and sends Luthor back to prison. Action wise it's even better than the first movie.
