Based on Savannah Knoop's memoir Girl Boy Girl: How I Became JT Leroy, this captivating true story goes beyond the headlines to tell the story of the most compelling literary hoax of recent times. Laura Albert writes as her avatar, 'a disenfranchised young queer man' named JT LeRoy. When her debut novel becomes a best-seller and JT becomes the darling of the literary world, she comes up with a unique solution to preserve her anonymity but give life to her nom-de-plume.

The movie is based on a true story about the literary hoax of the nonexistent author JT Leroy that writer Laura Albert and her sister in law Savannah Knoop perpetrated. It would probably be a good idea to watch Albert's documentary "Author:The JT Leroy Story" which details the controversy from her point of view and then watch" JT LeRoy" the fictionalized film which was written from Savannah Knoop's point of view. The story is so outlandish and wild that it is surprising that this movie is a little bit slow and uninvolving. Laura Dern gives a good performance as Laura Albert and Diane Kruger is quite interesting as the thinly veiled Asia Argento who is so taken in by the hoax that she has a fling with the fake LeRoy(Kristen Stewart) while trying to get his movie rights she so desperately wants. The film is just a little too straight forward and could have used that crazy off the wall style from something like "I Tonya"

Found it to be very boring. Actually had to watch the complete movie by stopping it at the mid point and finish watching it later. Even the end of the movie was not great.
