Grades 1-3. This beautifully illustrated book follows Sulwe on a journey from trying to change the skin she is in, to Sulwe loving herself by learning she is beautiful just as she is.

Add a CommentAmazing. The story is moving, whimsicle, and helps a young girl start to have acceptance and self-esteem while showing the colorism around her. The illustrations are beautiful, and the blend of the fable with the child's world works perfectly.
Magnificent. We all could learn a lesson from the shining star of this gorgeous picture book that blends fairytale and realism.
What an endearing story by first time author about skin color and feeling comfortable in your skin. Vashti Harrisson’s illustrations are simply stunning and capture the heart of both the young reader and their parents. My 2 year old and I absolutely adore this book!
I read this for my "An Author's Debut Book" part of my 2020 reading challenge. I loved it, the artwork was phenomenal and the story was beautiful and moving. It was a perfect way to show diversity and that we are all beautiful and bright.
A really touching story about learning to become comfortable with yourself, both inside and out! The illustrations are stunning, and there is just the right amount of text for a read aloud to young ones. I liked the tale of day and night, and the lesson of not fully appreciating one without the other. Check this one out!
A whimsical and moving #ownvoices story about a little girl's journey to accepting her skin color and finding that there is beauty in every shade.
Beautiful story, beautiful art, and beautiful sentiment.
The illustrations and the story matched perfectly. It was almost as if they were the sisters in Sulwe's dream - one of day and one of night. I really enjoyed reading this story to my seven year old and she really liked it.
This absolutely beautiful picture book is such a lovely story about loving the skin that you're in.
It specifically addresses colorism and shows a lot of the ways people with darker complexions get marginalized even amongst people from the same ethnicity and background. There's a story within the story, a myth that shows why we should value light and dark, and there are several sections that really hit home for the little girl in me who once thought she'd be prettier and happier if she had a different skin color.
The whole book is gorgeously drawn, but the illustrations for the myth are particular standouts.
This gorgeous picture book is a magical exploration of loving the skin you're in. I hope actress Lupita Nyong'o writes more!
