This is the WW1 movie I always wanted to be made. A sweeping epic that moves rapidly across the Western Front. While many critics have commented on the historical illogicality of sending a single pair of runners to warn a company about to go over the top into a massacre without sending other groups of runners to make sure the message got through, you could watch the entire movie and pretend that this was the case the whole time. Anyhow, despite some illogical plot points the movie does provide some real historical accuracy. One detail I liked was the changing mood of soldiers in the trenches the closer to the front line they are. The one shot technique was quite exhilarating and immersive but I thought the last 30 minutes of Children of Men was a more impressive use of this technique.

1917(2019) is a War/Drama film directed by Sam Mendes, starring George McKay and Dean-Charles Chapman. The movie takes place in April of 1917, nearing the end of WWI. In the beginning we see two British soldiers, Lance Cpl. Schofield and Lance Cpl. Blake, resting beside a tree when they are called in to deliver a message to call off an attack that could kill 1600 fellow soldiers, Blake’s brother being one of them. Without dying, they must hastily cross enemy territory to deliver this letter. Along the way, they stop for a couple of minutes when they see water. While they are drinking, a German biplane crashes next to them. They get up to save the pilot but he ends up stabbing Blake, and he dies shortly after. Schofield continues the journey alone, and he arrives at the scene of an upcoming attack on the Germans by the British, but he gives the letter right before Colonel Mackenzie could officially order the attack. This is one of my favorite movies of all time for 3 reasons. One, this movie is very different from other War films. Two, almost every single scene of this film is suspenseful, from, the time they almost died from the trap in the bunker, to the ending. And third, the cinematography. The whole movie was filmed to look like it was one continuous shot, but in reality it wasn’t. Still amazing.

Well researched, well directed, great FX / CGI, superb costuming. If it hadn't glorified war, if it hadn't made death in war "heroic," I would have been happier at the end.

Incredibly shot -the cinematography is amazing. Not one cut scene, it's ridiculous.
Having said that it was a heavy movie, I felt shell shocked after not knowing if I really liked it or not. In the end it's a good movie and worth seeing. It was never boring, always interesting events happening. Sometimes it was hard to show changes in time due to having no cuts. And it was hard to know how much time had past. Overall RECOMMEND, and from someone who isn't into war movies.

Interesting film related to WWI. It is the story of two British soldiers who receive orders to cross into enemy territory to deliver a message that will save 1,600 soldiers. This premise alone made for an interesting movie.

This was an on the edge of your seat film for me. Quite realistic, and that was displayed well. The very scene when Sco was running as the groups of soldiers came over the top and several crashed into him, knocking him down was not a CG segment. It wasn't in the script for them to do that, but it happened, and so they kept it in. There is nothing pretty about war, nothing romantic about it either. More scary than anything. A good film. Some language splattered within it, but still worth the watch.

Boring. Scenes stretched out far too long. Other scenes shot in the dark. Rationale questionable. Disappointing.

Excellent, gripping thriller period piece. Really well acted!

Great cinematography, but with weak character development, a limited story line, and unrealistic video game-like scenes, there's nothing for the viewer to connect with or care about.
