Maguire travels back to Frank L. Baum's land of Oz for this absorbing fantasy that delves into the background if the famed Wicked Witch of the West, a misunderstood creature who challenges the preconceived notions of good and evil. Unabridged.
The original Wizard of Oz was scary and dreadful. I'm not sure what it is, but the whole production communicates melancholy. "Wicked" is very imaginative and shows that you shouldn't pay attention to the cowd. They can misinterpret you and your actions. No matter what, you can still do it!
In the original The Wizard Of Oz, Oz is the dream of a child who got caught in a tornado as a result of trying to run away from her problems. The child's view is sweet and hopeful. In Wicked, Oz appears to be the dream of the carnival man as he attempts suicide by drowning. It makes for a much sadder view. While the book is imaginative and engaging, I come away with the question "Why would I want to make myself sadder?"
