Howard Hughes was a wily industrialist, glamorous movie producer, and unstoppable American innovator, but thought of himself first and foremost as an aviator. This spectacular epic focuses on the most prolific period in his life: the mid-1920s through the 1940s -- a time of brilliant aeronautical invention, turbulent love affairs and savage corporate battles. Prepare for the ride of a lifetime.

A semi-factual take on the adult active life of the notorious Hughes. His talents and eccentricities were many, as were his accomplishments. The film has some noticeable interior design which is even explicitly remarked upon by the characters.

Directed by Martin Scorsese in 2004 based on the 1993 non-fiction book "Howard Hughes: The Secret Life" by Charles Higham, this American docudrama depicts the life of Howard Hughes between 1927 and 1947, during which time Hughes became a successful film producer and an aviation magnate while simultaneously growing more unstable due to severe obsessive–compulsive disorder.
Technically brilliant and emotionally disturbing, the film describes Howard as descending from eccentric billionaire to reclusive madman.
In 1958, Hughes told his aides that he wanted to screen some movies at a film studio near his home.
He stayed in the studio's darkened screening room for more than four months, never leaving.
He ate only chocolate bars and chicken and drank only milk, and was surrounded by dozens of Kleenex boxes that he continuously stacked and re-arranged.
He wrote detailed memos to his aides giving them explicit instructions neither to look at him nor speak to him unless spoken to.
Throughout this period, Hughes sat fixated in his chair, often naked, continually watching movies.
When he finally emerged in the summer of 1958, his hygiene looked terrible.
He had neither bathed nor cut his hair and nails for weeks.
In the film, however, these scenes took place before 1947.

Another great DiCaprio/Scorsese collaboration, but if about 15-20 more minutes were cut, then this could have been a much better movie.

A solid movie about Howard Hughes early life, the people he met, his rich lifestyle BEFORE he actually became increasing paranoid. He was demanding, cynical and juvenile in most ways because of his wealth. He had his own vision but that vision was misguided and led to his demise. He wanted to be a great Hollywood director but failed at that and he was a demanding innovator in the aircraft design industry.

Good acting, adventure 'shake your head" childish, demanding behaviors of people in the movie.

Bravo! Wow, wow, wow.
If you enjoy biopics, history, Old Hollywood, or aviation this is a stellar film that runs on all cylinders. I am somewhat critical of films in general, but I frankly can't think of any room for improvement with this movie. OK, CGI has improved since this premiered in 2004... but watching the special features of the film took my initial appreciation of it to a whole new level: not only the painstaking detail of every filmmaking process involved, but also the man who was Howard Hughes.

A long and very interesting movie. Howard Hughes became more eccentric as he got older. He became bolder with his thinking and aircraft design. I think I would like to watch this movie again sometime.
The second disk is very interesting to watch. Howard Hughes was much more than a wealthy film maker and aviator with a mental illness. His work in avaiation continues to infulence the world of exploration to this day. His medical reasearch foundation continues it's work in many areas. As Howard Hughes became more and more reclusive, his wealth continued to increase. unfortunately he died without heirs or a will. In life Howard Hughes tried very hard to avoid taxes, how unfortunate he did not plan for his departure.
