From Library Staff

In 1959, Dr. Lucien Blake returns to his rural Australian hometown to run his late father's medical practice. He becomes a medical examiner, and is drawn to solving murders that confound local law enforcement. A most entertaining series, currently in its fourth season.

This doesn't measure up to the other great mystery dramas shown on PBS. I gave up after watching two - pretty boring. Life is too short to waste time - pales in comparison to Prime Suspect, Broadchurch, The Line (foreign language - I think that what it was called), and more.

Maybe it's because I watched season 1 of the excellent Endeavour just before watching season 1 of this series that I found it shallow, pedestrian, without much intrigue, and more or less predictable. I did watch all ten episodes hoping for improvement. For my money, that did not happen. I will not bother watching more.

Took a chance on this series from Australia and was so glad I did! I highly recommend it! It has a lot of the same quality programming that I've seen from other series from ABC (Aust. Broadcasting Corp.). The writing is first rate and found myself binge-watching at least 2 or 3 episodes at a time because you really can't guess what is going to happen at the end - not predictable at all! The characters are well-rounded too! Am definitely looking forward to watching all of the rest of the 5 series available here at EPL (Edmonton Public Library).

Good episodes. The character of doctor Blake is not always realistic but entertaining. A nice and different than usual set of household.

Quite enjoyable post WWII medical-detective work. The accents are mostly comprehensible, unlike some Aussie tv productions where we need the subtitles to follow the plot.

Dr. Blake is a rather melancholy, talented Police surgeon living with painful memories of his past and surrounded by interesting characters. A theme song reminiscent of the violin of Sherlock Holmes. Quite enjoyable crime mystery series. No heavy hard-to-decipher Aussie accents. Looking forward to seeind Season 2 & 3.

A completely addictive mystery series, on par with "A Place to Call Home". Features fascinating characters with sizzling on-screen chemistry, and intelligent dialogue with loads of wry humour. Highly recommended.

I have been watching on PBS for several months however by the time I knew about the show, it was already at season 3 and I could not figure out the relationships between Dr Blake and his housemates so I wanted to view the first season. Unfortunately, it didn't clarify anything. Nothing explained where the father is, how the housekeeper came to them. It doesn't really matter - the stories are good, the acting is okay but I don't find the character of Dr. Blake to be unlikeable and self-centered. Oh well, not every character can be pleasant, well-rounded and well-liked. I give this a B-.

An excellent series, well worth watching. Unlike current shows in this genre they are actually technically & scientifically accurate.
