The fifth season opens with a double-length episode in which the Barones visit Italy. It paints a Roman paradise where the world slows down to the whims of its denizens. There's something about that episode, not just the beauty of the location, but the mood, the tone, the spirit that brings tears to my eyes. This premiere’s emphasis on the familial bond is integral to the rest of the season, which adopts a strong sense of family that brings about some home truths that startle the usual suspects. Meanwhile, Robert deals with his lady woes and finds out his areas of weakness through his overbearing mother's meddling. That's the Barones, though; they're close-knit to the point of tangled. The season ends on a sweet note with Raymond reminiscing about the birth of his daughter, which brings the family invasiveness to a new level. It may be chaos, but this show provides a layer of warmth that really brings home the meaning of family. I highly recommend this fifth season of EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND.
