An iconic poetry collection from American luminary Leonard Cohen, containing some of his most significant verse

Leonard Cohen wrote the poems in Book of Longing--his first book of poetry in more than twenty years after 1984's Book of Mercy--during his five-year stay at a Zen monastery on Southern California's Mount Baldy, and in Los Angeles, Montreal, and Mumbai. This dazzling collection is enhanced by the author's playful and provocative drawings, which interact in exciting, unexpected ways on the page with poetry that is timeless, meditative, and often darkly humorous.

An international sensation, Book of Longing contains all the elements that have brought Cohen's artistry with language worldwide recognition.

I thoroughly enjoyed this work over a few evenings. Some poems were read and re-read. Cohen's humor and poetical insights are beautifully illustrated. One gets his humanity coming vividly across from his words and art. It shows his genius of showing ordinary events and things having impacts on our lives and destinies. Beautiful work.

This book reviews itself. No really: one of its poems includes this comment on itself, "this odd collection of jazz riffs, pop-art jokes, religious kitsch and muffled prayer".
It's not great poetry- but Cohen himself admits it. People dismiss his honesty as becoming self-deprecation.
But damn, he's a past master of irony:
"I never got the girl,
I never got rich,
follow me."
A very canadian minor poet.
