The sets are great. The costumes are good. The singing and dancing is mostly wonderful. The comedy sketches do not translate well to today and I can't imagine they were that funny in 1945.

Watch this movie for one of the actor/singer/dancers and skip all of the parts that don't have your favorite.

VERY GOOD 1945 movie which is 19 cuts of a variety of show biz flavors - singing, dancing, big stages, comedy.
Some of the early ones were a bit slow for me, but it constantly picked up steam as it went along. The producers knew which cuts were the best, and arranged the sequence accordingly.
I particularly enjoyed the Judy Garland sequence near the end - wow!

If you ask me - I'd say that Ziegfeld Follies was a perfect example of just how much Hollywood was so blindly in love with itself in the year 1945.

This gaudy, garish, and clunky, post-WW2 time-waster could only appeal to the most die-hard fans of pure Tinseltown schmaltz, and no one else.

Incompetently directed by that silly, flamboyant queen, Vincente Minnelli, Ziegfeld Follies was an unbelievably irksome mess of 15 short acts which either consisted of comedy, dance or song.

Even though this utter piece of junk featured such big-name stars as Lena Horne, Fred Astaire, Judy Garland and Red Skelton, it was truly some of the absolute worst entertainment I've seen from that era of movie-making in a mighty long, long time.
