The collection contains training materials, pamphlets, planning calendars, newspaper articles, and other materials relating to the efforts of Douglas County, Colo., in regards to Civil Defense during the Cold War. Some articles of personal correspondence are also included in the collection, as well as the beginning of a manuscript on Mr. Fleming's experiences called The reluctant giant. The original donated notebooks have been disassembled and their contents organized alphabetically by subject. The original copies of full-page newspaper articles that he collected, and that were originally bolted to a board, comprise box 2 of the collection. Most of these been photocopied and placed in box 1 folders entitled Collected articles. The articles are mostly on civil defense subjects, including his newspaper column entitled Civil defense news that appeared in many area newspapers in Douglas County and surrounding areas. However, there are also clippings on other subjects, including the JFK assassination. Also included is a set of photographs documenting the mock emergency excercises that were scheduled on June 16, 1965, ironically the same day as the flood that caused significant destruction in Douglas County as well as in areas to the north, including Denver.
