I really enjoyed this swashbuckling adventure story. Charlotte learned about herself and how strong she was. She had many scary things happen, but faced them all. It was very suspenseful. I would recommend this story to middle school children.

Charlotte Doyle, a thirteen-year-old girl, is returning home to Rhode Island from her school in England to visit her family over the summer during the year 1832. She has to board a ship known as "The Seahawk" with two other families. The two families suddenly cancel their trip, and Charlotte Doyle is alone. The captain and crew of the ship are the only other people on the voyage with her. At first, everyone seems rather suspicious, and soon Charlotte finds herself in the middle of an intense crossfire between the cruel captain and the crew. Whose side should Charlotte take? This story was interesting due to the unique and engaging concept of the story. The way Charlotte has to find ways to cope with the crew contributes to how interesting the book is. Overall, The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle contains unique elements and an overall unique concept, making it a great read.

This book is the ultimate version of "You can't judge a book by its cover" because you can't judge this book or any of its characters by their "covers". Is Charlotte only the proper young lady she appears to be? Is Captain Jaggery really a gentleman? What about Zachariah, the cook? All will surprise you and bring you thrills on the high seas!
