The Prefect is an unusually effective combination of science fiction and detective genres. The setting is a few centuries in the future where orbital settlements surround a planet and provide the home for a pure democracy in which all citizens vote on every issue. In classic detective story style, a specific crime turns out to be only the tip of an iceberg which reaches back to reveal new aspects of previous events, draws nationalities into conflict, and leads to artificial intelligences. Prefect Dreyfus, the detective, smoothly navigates both future technology and primordial human nature as he puts the pieces together. And this is a good time to revisit this 2007 novel as Reynolds recently published Elysium Fire, a sequel with a new mystery for the characters to investigate.
