Storm chasing, pursuing violent weather, tornadoes, or perhaps, hurricanes even, is, to be sure, an avocation that generates an appreciation for the raw power of nature; for the vulnerability of man when caught in the path of such destruction; and a lot of adrenalin. Sort of like bungee jumping; free-fall skydiving or rappelling down the side of the Empire State Building only with lots of wind and noise. It’s something some people live to do and others are quite content to simply read about.
This book is about storm chasing, and about storm chasing’s “bad boy”, Reed Timmer. You may have caught him and his customized, armoured tornado chase vehicle, “the Dominator” in the current Imax feature “Tornado Alley”.
The book is about Timmer and how an oboe-playing geek studied meteorology and went and followed the weather. This book is anything but dry. It is packed with energy and excitement --- just like the tornadoes he chases. There are plenty of dry lines, wall clouds, flying buildings and all the other bits and pieces of chaser lore.
And what about the book? A super read. I found it hard to put this book down. In fact I didn’t. I couldn’t. It was a non-stop read. For that reason, this book is highly recommended.
