They left their troubles at the office. Left the wives and kids behind. Four men bound for the wilderness, for a great adventure--without their golf clubs. Lewis has talked his buddies Ed, Drew, and Bobby into going on a canoe trip down the Cahulawassee River, which is being soon to be dammed. It was the weekend they hoped for, but it turns out to be a weekend where the destruction of nature, macho posturing, conflict between city and country folk, and the dangerous disconnection of modern civilization from nature will loom entirely too large.

Watch the bonus video. almost better than the movie. It is about how they made the movie. Very interesting. The book is wonderful to read. The author of the book has a cameo in the film. He is the Sheriff.
The author is James Dickey, a good Southern writer.

Starts out lighthearted, then gets dark. Not really a survival tale. More like trying to escape some sadists.

Still great for those that have seen and great for all new viewers.

this is a perfect movie in all respects- and it operates on many levels and is one of the top ten movies of the 70s, and beyond. It will never date as its themes are universal.

It is about many different plots and themes- it is about the old folk ways going away due to progress- ( the canoe trip is taken as its the last time before a dam will displace or " civilize" the river.. it is about how the urban mindset clashes with the primitive and feral rural. it is about a nightmare where a canoe trip goes horribly wrong- and where none of the characters will ever be the same- and in one case- will end up dead- along with some of the hill people.
It is also one of the few movies that is as great as the book- it is simultaneously scary, melancholic, nostalgic, terrifying and memerizing- all at once.
The development of the characters is also part of the interest and how the four different people break under pressure - and others seem to hold on . It is one of the great " man or male " movies.
Cant recommend it more.

I had never seen this movie before, and I think it was pretty brave for it's time. Rape to men or women is all about power.

Absolutely superlative tale of four friends on a weekend canoe trip which goes horribly wrong. It has the two most repulsive villains in the history of movies, and the Dueling Banjos number is justly famous. Creepy and suspenseful. Beware of prints with the love scene cut out.

It was ok....I didn’t find it to be a thriller as noted below. Maybe compared to the thrillers today it wasn’t as scary.

Deliverance hasn't aged well cinematically but is significant for its theme of urban vs rural misunderstanding-based conflict.
Southern Comfort (1981) escalates that conflict whereas Dale & Tucker vs. Evil (2010) satirizes it. The Deer Hunter (1978) and Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" also have parallels, which makes me suspect that some events in this film portrayed as reality are perhaps intended to be fear-based exaggerations.

A complex and compelling novel finds the perfect film vehicle in simple, straightforward storytelling by a strong cast and adept cinematographer. Jon Voight's quietly emotional and natural performance drives the film forward, and Burt Reynolds is surprisingly great. The film is dynamic and powerful, plumbing the depths of human experience, poverty, and terror. This is not a movie for the faint of heart, but also not necessarily for the summer-slasher crowd either. It's gruesome in parts, but it's also deep and truthful.

One of the great things about Deliverance is that, even though it is an adventure filmed in the 1970's, it has managed to not age like a 70's film. It is both depressing and edge-of-your-seat suspenseful at the same time. The four leads do a tremendous job of playing the parts of urban dwellers who want a weekend of adventure in the wilds of Georgia and wind up getting far more than they bargained for. It has much to say about what it takes to make a man uncivilized and whether or not there is a bit of savagery in all of us, despite how domesticated we may be in predictable situations. Past these observation I won't rehash the plot elements since just about everybody on earth knows the details, and if you don't I won't spoil it for you.
