I like a good metafiction, and the ones where characters are self-aware and try to defy their intended roles is my absolute favorite of this sub-genre. But "Between the Lines" lucked out. The inherent tragedy of a romance between a reader and a book character is evident in the premise, but the ending had strange pacing and failed to deliver on a sound conclusion. It reminds me of my fanfiction writing days where I tried to bend over backwards to have a happy ending, but even then I knew that you can't suddenly change the terms of established plot points to get what you might want. This is one fairy tale that I won't be revisiting.
