This is the first book in a trilogy that combines two of Nora Roberts' favorite themes ... witches and Ireland. It focuses on Iona, an American who has come to Ireland to meet her distant cousins after a lifetime of haunting dreams, to find that she is a witch whose family has been fighting an ancient evil for 800 years. She must join together with her cousins Branna and Connor (who teach her how to use her magic) to finally defeat an evil sorcerer. What makes this trilogy different from Nora's other magic trilogies is that it felt darker to me than her others, I think because of a combination of the setting and the history she gives to her storyline.
