The Boys in the Boat

[Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics]
Apr 19, 2014
I loved this book! The characters, especially the key rower, Joe Rantz, are admirable in their moral steadfastness and their work ethic both in & out of the boat. The races are thrillingly recounted and the historical context is inherently dramatic: the human suffering of the Depression and the surreal, twisted setting of the Nazi Olympics. If you are into working out at all, you'll find great motivation in recalling their superhuman physical efforts when you are exercising and your muscles start screaming at you. I listened to this via my library's online audiobook service with OneClick Digital and loved the narration. However, I missed being able to see photos as I was listening, so I had to go online to find pictures of the main characters. Read it before the movie comes out!
