Margaret Atwood has always been one of my favorite writers*, so I'm shocked to not only rate this book so low, but to have given up reading before I was halfway through it. I just could not spend another minute with either Stan or Charmaine. Dystopian fiction is something I tend to avoid, and the plot here depends on the stupidity of all of the characters, so there was nothing I could connect to. In reading the other comments here it's clear that I missed the "wicked humor" that others appreciated. I get the intent of portraying "the banality of evil" but that has been done better elsewhere. *My 3 favorites: Cats Eye, The Robber Bride, The Blind Assassin.
