Elegantly and intelligently written, the action takes place after the Russian revolution (early 1920's) and chronicles the adventures (mostly emotional) of a man sentenced to spend his remaining years in captivity at the hotel in Moscow which he's long used as his second home. Count Rostov was sentenced through a tribunal which decided not to execute him, but to sentence him to life imprisonment instead, but he leads a surprisingly rich and ultimately rewarding life of the mind inside the hotel. A lovely, sprightly and humorous book. Richly rewarding to read. Highly recommend this one!
