Elly Griffiths never fails to satisfy with her series of mystery novels featuring forensic archaeologist/amateur detective Ruth Galloway. Her latest offering, The Woman in Blue, departs slightly from her previous books in that the mystery involves a rather more modern theme than usual. The novel is set in Walshingham, Norfolk, once the site of a medieval monastery, and a destination for pilgrims honouring the Virgin Mary, and now prominent as a place where beautiful blonde women are brutally murdered. While the book is interesting for its discussion of religious conflict, both modern and historical, it is even more intriguing for its back story, the development in the lives and loves of the characters that have become so familiar to readers of the previous seven novels in the series. The Ruth Galloway novels are always a treat, and this is no exception.
