There is no need for this book to be this long. This story could have been told in 250, 300 pages, easily. There is so much fluff, you could stuff several Captain Chromium dolls with it, and still have enough left over to make a pillow that Nova won't use. Seriously, she might not sleep, but this book might make you want to. I'm not a big super hero fan, but even I can smell the tropes. The universe is somehow bland and preachy at the same time. We're told what it means to be a hero in the last few chapters, and how you don't need powers to be super, but it comes across as a lecture, not inspirational. The powers are interesting, if we could explore what they really could do. The ideas are there, but they're buried under uninteresting nonsense that could have been solved with a decent editor. But considering the popularity of the author, I imagine the editors sat on the ground and let her step on their hands rather than touch the book with anything critical.
