Women have contributed to our history and this book celebrates them and their diversity. The women featured here are bold, inspiring and were passionate about what they did. Phillis Wheatley was a poet during a time when women of color were not allowed to be educated. Mary Eliza Mahoney was a nurse and helped challenge racism in the south. Alice Ball was a chemist, medical researcher and the first African American to graduate with a master’s degree from the University of Hawaii. Marian Anderson was an opera singer and the first African American to perform with the New York Metropolitan Opera. Raven Wilkinson was a ballerina and danced until she was fifty. Marcelite Harris was an air force general and was the highest-ranking black woman in the Department of Defense. Author Vashti Harrison wanted to share with young readers woman in Black History. This guide features African American women and their struggle to become the pioneers they were. Young readers will enjoy learning about history and can be inspired to follow their own dreams.
