I read this Ian Rutledge story immediately after the latest Bess Crawford book and was disappointed. The writing is stiff. The characters are sketchily drawn. Their interrelationships are not detailed enough to give meaning to their voices or actions and do not add to the story line. The action seems repetitive and abrupt. After 240 pages I skipped to the end. The revelation of the killer is a deus ex machina. I recommend reading other Charles Todd books about Ian Rutledge first.
