Book 2 in the A League of Extraordinary Women series is the love story of Lady Lucy (the Tewbury Termagant) and Lord Ballentine (soldier, poet, and seducer). Fireworks start when Ballentine buys the majority shares in the publishing house that Lucy is planning to use to further her suffragette work. Both characters find many ways to scandalize polite society and often cross paths while doing so. When Lucy's needs and wants collide with Ballentine's, "war is declared". Dunmore's writing style deftly mixes historical research and traditional romance in a stylish writing style. The author brings the Victorian era alive in a way that feels fresh and real. No sepia-toned photographs of a dour Queen Victoria grace this story.
