One of Us is Next by Karen McManus is the sequel to the murder-mystery One of Us is Lying that follows a new cast of characters and their conflict with a new copycat version of the old gossip app. Most of the characters in this new book played minor roles in the first story, allowing the reader to recognize and remember aspects of their character before the story even starts. On top of the new main characters playing roles in the first story, readers are given insight on what the Bayview Four is up to now and their relationships with each other as they’ve grown older. This is a nice way to create a new story with familiar characters while satisfying readers who wanted to see what the future for the original four was like after everything died down. With the bar set high from its predecessor, the new cast of characters is written and developed well, just as in the first book. However, as the first story had action right away, its sequel spends more time building up to the action, which can be disappointing to some readers who don’t like a slow start to a story. As a sequel, the story is very heavily intertwined with the plot of the original story making the task of reading One of Us is Lying necessary before picking this one up. Overall One of Us is Next is a very satisfying sequel worth reading if you enjoyed the first of the series, both for another well-written mystery and to see the future of the original cast.
