The Book of Basketball

the NBA According to The Sports Guy
Mar 16, 2013
Author Bill Simmons brings this book containing mass amounts of basketball knowledge. Dating all the way back to the ABA days, Simmons gradually plows through the most important times in basketball and the people involved. Almost every page contains footnotes which tell their own story. This book gives a perspective of how the game of basketball was played in the past and how it is now, and it offers many comparisons between past and present players. Simmons has been around basketball for his whole life and the stories he shares are very enjoyable. One of the most interesting sections of this book is the ranking of the best players of all-time. Every player has their own set of paragraphs followed by Simmons’ explanation of why they should be placed where they are. The player also has his accomplishments listed to gain a sense of what they had or have done over their career thus far. Also, Simmons tackles the debate of Bill Russell vs. Wilt Chamberlain and looks at the debate from many angles. It should be pointed out that Simmons grew up a Celtics fan and will always bleed green, so this causes some bias throughout the book. Nothing too harsh though. Overall, if you are a hardcore basketball fan this is the book for you.
